Why Are You Called "French Events"?

Here’s the Full Story...

Just like French Fries are actually Belgian, Mallory Wilson, owner and co-founder of French Events is not French... Scottish, actually. Depending on who you ask, there’s not a lot of difference. Mallory is third generation Scottish. Her great grandfather immigrated to the US as a professional golfer. Her family settled in Memphis, Tennessee in the early 1900’s.

Mallory's other great grandfather owned the first funeral home in Mississippi. Her maternal grandparents owned a chain of car washes and feed stores. Mallory's father owned a plumbing company and mother owned a pre-k program franchise, so she grew up with great entrepreneurial role models.

All of Mallory's jobs have involved event planning in some way, from managing a wedding venue to corporate events. In 2015, while working as a corporate event planner at Evergreen Packaging in Memphis, Mallory suddenly lost her father after a short, six month fight with esophageal cancer. It was time for a change of scenery and she decided it was time to fulfill a lifelong dream: move to California!

Mallory attended grad school in San Diego in 2014 and was eager to go back. Her best friend had just made the move to attend AAU in San Francisco. The pair secured an apartment in the Richmond District in SF, and Mallory accepted a job at a prestigious consulting firm just two weeks after deciding to move! Mallory spent a year of lunch breaks and free time wandering the streets of San Francisco and enjoying all her "change of scenery" had to offer.

After one year, she was already fed up with paying high rent prices, so she decided to buy a house in Vallejo. Mallory immediately fell in love with Vallejo’s residents, artistic downtown, Mare Island trails and tree-lined streets. She spent her first year commuting to San Francisco Monday through Friday by ferry, but the long hours were awful.

Enter Nathan French. A storybook romance that found its beginning where many modern relationships start (for better or worse)- on Tinder! It was honestly love at first sight like Mallory never experienced before. Nathan and Mallory's first date was a trip to Seattle to see a Nirvana cover band and visit the Marvel exhibit at MoPOP. On that trip, the two started talking about creating a business together that combined his talents as an artist and Mallory's as an event coordinator.

Nathan spent the last ten years working at UCPNB (United Cerebral Palsy of the North Bay) as an Art Specialist, teaching adults with various learning disabilities creativity and artistic therapies. Nathan builds elaborate games and props for fundraisers. He paints murals and hosted the Vallejo Art Walk in his free time. His creation skills and Mallory's event planning skills inspired French Events.

For the next six months, the pair worked constantly, keeping their full time jobs while building a website, designing a logo, creating marketing materials, accumulating inventory, and designing handmade projects. Starting a business put a lot of stress on the new relationship. On December 25, 2018, they got engaged! On February 15, 2019, they broke up.

Mallory Wilson took over French Events. To keep from having to explain the name to strangers, she decided to adopt an adorable French Bulldog, ironically born in February 15, 2019. She named her Cassoulet (Cassie) French. She became the mascot for French Events and new best friend.

Nathan and Mallory spent a few weeks with hurt feelings and broken hearts, then starting making mutual efforts to repair the relationship. Love is worth fighting for and French Events is worth fighting for. What once seemed like an insane move to name a company after a boyfriend, now reminds Mallory of their love story.

Mallory is proud to be the owner of French Events (even though she's Scottish). The name represents love, ambition, family, overcoming and moving forward. And, we can all agree it has a nice “ring to it.” It may not be the perfect story, but it’s a good story and it’s our’s.
